Sotheby's New York, in collaboration with the Council of Fashion Designers of America, has unveiled the auction collection CFDA: Defining American Style. The collection consists of 37 pieces that highlight iconic moments in American fashion, with designers ranging from seasoned, established figures to new trailblazers in the industry.

CFDA: Defining American Style is on exhibition in Sotheby's New York Gallery from January 12 - January 20, and is open to the public for viewing. The pieces are available for bidding online beginning January 9, and the auction closes on January 23. The collection celebrates the unmatched artistry and some of the most unforgettable cultural moments of the past few decades, with pieces worn by esteemed public figures including Anna Wintour, Margot Robbie, Taylor Swift, Kate Moss, Lady Gaga, Erykah Badu, and Winnie Harlow, among others.

The highly curated collection includes pieces spanning the past few decades, acting as a time capsule of the best of American fashion, and includes a wide range of looks, ranging from pieces by iconic fashion designers like Stephen Burrows and Halston in the 1970s, a rare Calvin Klein 1988 look, an early 2000s Ralph Rucci jacket, all the way to recent styles by Khaite and Rick Owens from 2023.

“When you think of American craftsmanship and fashion, you must first think of the incredible stories that people are telling here…and the diversity in storytelling that nowhere else in the world offers… that’s what you’ll see in the pieces each designer has chosen… the breadth of the creativity that happens here in America," said Thom Browne, CFDA Chairman.

All proceeds from the auction will benefit the CFDA Foundation, which supports CFDA Scholarships and business mentoring to foster the next generation of American fashion designers.
