Simone Rocha Explores Her Chinese Heritage for Spring 2019
Simone Rocha's show at Lancaster House last night was inspired by the clothing worn in the Tang Dynasty in the 16th Century. Rocha's father and a large portion of her family come from Hong Kong, so the designer wished to explore this aspect of her background for her latest collection. She included wallpaper brocade, lace flowers, and statement hats with veils in a collection that is very far removed from fashion's current obsession with streetwear and modernity.
In a recent interview, she explained that a recent visit also inspired the collection; "I was also thinking about Qingming, the Chinese equivalent of the Day of the Dead when everyone goes up the mountain in Hong Kong to clean their family’s gravestones," she said. "I was there this Easter when we went up to visit our grandparents."
