How to Style Shrugs: Fashion's Latest Revival Trend

A style that carries seamlessly from summer to fall, shrugs are the easiest way to add dimension and warmth to any outfit.

A shrug is basically just any long-sleeve top with only the disembodied sleeves. Sounds impractical right? Yet, even in its simplest form, this item is one of the most functional pieces for layering. From knitwear to crochet and mesh, the shrug can be created with a myriad of different materials and styles.

This summer, celebrities and influencers were spotted sporting the shrug on top of tank tops, bikinis, and dresses for the perfect cover-up when stepping into the often colder indoor spaces. Some were delicate and minimalist while others were striking and vibrant, standing out as a focal garment. Unlike a cardigan, it has no way of covering up any part of your top and only serves to elevate an outfit. Has the shrug replaced the cardigan? It seems so.

As we transition into the cooler seasons, the shrug transitions with us. We predict the chunky knit trend of last year carrying on to this year, especially with shrugs. Several fashion influencers already made statement combinations with their colorful knit shrugs and we expect much more in the coming few months. It’s important to note that a shrug should either be layered with complementary colors or as a striking contrast to everything else, ensuring a faultless combination.

As an item of two top trends this past season, subversive basics and balletcore, we have no doubt the shrug is truly making its comeback. Scroll down to see how Instagram’s most stylish It girls are wearing their shrugs.
