Saint Laurent Explores the Elegance of 'French Water' in New Short Film by Jim Jarmusch
TikTok star Leo Reilly also leads the film, making his debut for the fashion house.
Anthony Vaccarello has never shied away from blending his love for fashion and film, so another short film to showcase Saint Laurent's Spring/Summer 2021 collection comes as no surprise. "French Water," directed by Jim Jarmusch, stars Charlotte Gainsbourg, Indya Moore, Julianne Moore, and Chloë Sevigny as a group of dinner party guests leaving their gathering, while TikTok star/musician Leo Reilly (a.k.a. LoveLeo) plays a waiter offering the group glasses of water. "It's French," he explains.
As the departing women scour the building in search of each other, Reilly notes with confusion their numerous sudden wardrobe changes. The mysterious Gainsbourg continues to vanish and reappear, adding to the surrealist portrait of her role. In one scene, she picks up a copy of Tales of Edgar Allen Poe and reads a quote: "They who dream by day are cognizant of many things that escape those who only dream by night."
Late last year, the fashion house released a film showcasing the same collection with Gasper Noé, titled "Summer of '21." The project founds its roots in Italian horror cinema from the '70s—called giallo—while implementing elements of the brand's '60s French aesthetic. The video featured Charlotte Rampling as she prepares for her call time on stage in the eerie mansion. Models flutter down the hallways and around the home's salon, presenting the collection's punk-inspired garments within a continental European context.
