Prada Debuts First Ever Raf Simons' Co-Created Collection
The two creative forces unveils their long-awaited collaboration for Spring/Summer 2021.
After it was announced last spring that Raf Simons was joining Miuccia Prada at her family’s fashion house, no one knew what to expect from the non-traditional arrangement—that was until now. Despite the ongoing pandemic, Prada held its Spring/Summer 2021 runway show as a live event this morning, marking the debut of the pair of co-creative directors at Milan Fashion Week.
The symbolism of the Prada logo, in combination with Simons’ experimental taste, was unveiled in the decisively modern womenswear collection. Various graphic pieces seen throughout the show featured the artwork of Peter de Potter, a long standing collaborator with Simons, who famously designed for Jil Sander, Christian Dior, and, most recently, Calvin Klein until his sudden departure in 2018.
As models encircled the curtained room bathed in yellow, a herd of black cameras were spiraled through the space in slow motion, no doubt an artistic comment on the COVID-19-affected fashion industry. Following the debut show, the duo held a question and answer series livestreamed online, in which both designers responded to questions crowd sourced from social media.
As the segment ended, Simons and Prada answered the question of their own interpretation of the future of fashion. “The more you are connected with reality—and with people—the more your job [as a designer] makes sense,” said Prada. No doubt Spring/Summer 2021 marks the future of the brand, whetting the appetite of what’s to come.
