Pieter Mulier Announced as New Creative Director at Alaïa
Over three years after the death of legendary fashion designer Azzedine Alaïa, the designer's namesake fashion brand has announced Pieter Mulier as the new Creative Director. For years, the designer worked alongside Raf Simons as his second-in-command, serving as Christian Dior's Design Director and Calvin Klein's Global Creative Director. Now, Mulier, venturing out on his own, will debut his first collection with Alaïa during the Spring/Summer 2022 season.
“It is my great pleasure to welcome Pieter into the Alaïa Maison," said CEO Myriam Serrano. "Through the creative prodigy and tenacious dedication of our dear founder Azzedine Alaïa, our Maison has been defined by a powerful vision of femininity and sensuality, which will forever set us apart. [...] His appointment marks the opening of an important new chapter for our Maison as we jointly seek to carry the foundational values and distinctive style of Alaïa into the future."
Like Mulier, Alaïa also honed his craft at Maison Dior. In 1980, he showcase his first collection under his own name, earning him Best Designer of the Year and Best Collection of the Year by the French Ministry of culture. Known for his tight-fitting, seductive garments, Alaïa has been credited with the popularization of the bodycon dress.
"It is an absolute dream to join this prestigious Maison, its beautiful ateliers and its talented team," said Mulier of his appointment. "Always ahead of his time and open to all arts and cultures, Azzedine Alaïa’s powerful vision has served as an inspiration, as he always sought to give the necessary time to innovative and enduring creation. It is with this tremendous sense of admiration and responsibility that I will seek to carry forward his legacy of celebrating femininity and placing women at the heart of creation."
