Opening Ceremony and Disney Launch the Happiest Collection on Earth
Mickey Mouse is celebrating his 90th birthday, and he hired Opening Ceremony to make the party favors. The brand, best known for its collaborations and nontraditional collection premieres, has joined forces with Disney to bring a fashion edge to timeless childhood magic.
Co-creative director Humberto Leon looked to Disney's archives for the collection, drawing Mickey graphics reminiscent of the iconic mouse's early days. And while the cartoon imagery is anything but subtle, this is a far cry from a gift shop sweatshirt or your childhood pajamas. Mickey's face jazzes up a faux-fur coat, his ears become sleeves on a statement blouse, and renderings of the iconic mouse in action decorate elegant gowns and maxi skirts.
The collection first debuted at "The Happiest Show on Earth," Opening Ceremony's Spring 2018 event held at Disneyland. The night attracted the likes of Maya Rudolph and Chance the Rapper, ended with an after-party at Toontown DJed by Diplo and featured plenty of merch covered in mouse ears in between. Now that the pieces are available for purchase, expect to see them on Disney superfans and logomania junkies alike, both on and off theme park grounds.
In a time marked by both uncertainty and campy nostalgia, Opening Ceremony's sartorial take on Disney memories feels relevant. Family-friendly magic has grown up a bit, making a sophisticated case for including Mickey Mouse patterns in the animal print trend.
The Disney x Opening Ceremony ready-to-wear collection is available now in Opening Ceremony stores and online.
