On the red carpet of the Met Gala, the personalities of international stars are brought to the forefront, often in the form of bold, beautiful, and bizarre costumes. The evening event, organized by the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute in New York, has become one of the most anticipated moments on the internet every year. The long history of the Met Gala is characterized by the yearly themes, but even more enduring are the celebrity looks, which range between eccentric, bizarre, elegant, absurd, and strange. Known as "Fashion's Biggest Night" and "Celebrities' Biggest Night," the event was founded by the renowned American fashion advertiser Eleanor Lambert in 1948 and has since become an annual highlight for the fashion industry.

Each year, the theme of the exhibition serves as inspiration for the looks worn on the Met Gala red carpet. Singers, pop stars, actors, influencers, and celebrities often sport haute couture designs or archival garments, specially created by the most important designers and creative directors at the head of the great luxury houses. From the iconic Christian Dior slip dress worn by Princess Diana in 1996 to Kim Kardashian's all-black futuristic morph suit dress created by Balenciaga for the 2021 gala, celebrities use the event as a chance to step out of their typical style and show off another rarely seen side to their fashion tastes.

Themed "The Garden of Time," the 2024 Met Gala will be one to remember, especially given the stacked hosts announced—Zendaya, Bad Bunny, Chris Hemsworth, and Jennifer Lopez. This year's theme is based on J.G. Ballard's short story of the same name, which was released in 1962. You can expect a myriad of floral, botanical, and natural-inspired looks on the red carpet this year, although based on the guest list, who knows how our favorite visionary celebrities will interpret the theme?

Ahead of the 2024 Met Gala red carpet, L'OFFICIEL has gathered all the strangest costumes and looks worn by international stars for the most anticipated fashion event of the year.
