Revisiting Martine Sitbon's Signature Rock 'N' Romantic Style
The first woman to helm Chloé since its founder Gaby Aghion, designer Martine Sitbon synthesized rock and roll and French romanticism—critically termed “rock ‘n’ romantic”—and elevated the heritage brand to epitomize French Cool Girl style in the late 1980s and early ‘90s. Though she left the maison in 1992, Sitbon enjoyed international recognition for her signature aesthetic, which resonated with the supermodel crowd. Like her mentees Phoebe Philo and Isabel Marant, Sitbon has since developed a cult following, growing increasingly buzzy amid today’s “indie sleaze” revival. Sitbon returns to the fashion stage with her new project, Rev—a line based on her namesake brand’s Fall/Winter 1997 collection. And Rizzoli’s upcoming Martine Sitbon: Alternative Vision, art directed by Sitbon’s longtime collaborator Marc Ascoli, offers an intimate understanding of the designer’s vision, featuring a treasure trove of photographs and sketches from her personal archives.
