Marc Jacobs Brings Back His Infamous Grunge Collection

The designer is rebooting the grunge collection for Perry Ellis that resulted in his termination.

It was 1993 when Marc Jacobs, then at Perry Ellis, sent Christy Turlington and Naomi Campbell down the runway in printed chiffon, crochet cardigans, and jersey cutout dresses. To call it controversial for such purveyors of prep as the Perry Ellis customer would be an understatement: Courtney Love and Kurt Cobain burnt the pieces they were sent; The New York TimesBernadine Morris said, “A typical outfit looks as if it were put together with the eyes closed in a very dark room.”

This morning, Jacobs announced that he’ll be rebooting the collection (equally credited for bringing grunge sensibilities mainstream) in a ‘redux’ capsule. Original materials and patterns will be used; Jacobs’ longtime collaborator Juergen Teller shot the lookbook with models of today’s moment with Gigi Hadid and Slick Woods leading the pack. So although Jacobs’ career has since progressed, it looks like the world is ready to go grunge once more.

The collection will be available online starting November 15 and in select boutiques November 19.
