Male Shoppers are All-In on the Square-Toed Shoe Trend
The results are in: square-toed shoes are here to stay. After gaining major popularity in the women's market over the past few seasons, L’OFFICIEL's global men's fall shopping survey reveals that the ‘90s-inspired look is also a hit with male consumers. During the Fall/Winter 2020 season, box-toed silhouettes were seen in everything from eye-catching chunky boots to strappy heeled sandals. While their popularity is undisputedly gender-inclusive, the data shows that certain parts of the world are more inclined toward particular square-toed styles. Parisian survey participants, for an example, were keen on a pair of monochrome boots from Prada, while men taking the survey from Italy consistently praised Versace's square-toed black boots.
Not only are shoppers enamored by the geometric shoe, but designers are increasingly incorporating them in their collections. During its Fall/Winter 2020 show, Bottega Veneta premiered sleek boots in black and white styles, while Jacquemus presented box-toe thigh grazers in both suede and patent leather.
However, designers have made it clear that square-toed styles are for more than just boxy boots. Balenciaga's square-toed Tyrex sneaker made headlines during the Spring/Summer 2020 season for its innovative shape, while Prada's Fall/Winter 2020 leather derby sneakers were an elevated version of the sporty chic style.
Not to be forgotten, square-toed loafers remain, as always, en vogue. From Burberry's timeless black oxfords (pictured above) to sleek slip-ons from Ferragamo, boxy loafers are a safe, but fashion-forward option to add to your work (or working from home) attire. While L’OFFICIEL’s global survey can only shed light on the hottest trends of the moment, it seems that the box toe trend is here to stay.
