Liza Koshy Celebrates Brown Girl Joy at Dior's Pre-Fall 2023 Show in Mumbai
Liza Koshy brings L'OFFICIEL along as she heads to Mumbai, India to attend Dior's Pre-Fall 2023 runway show.
You may recognize Liza Koshy from Vine, Youtube, red carpet interviews at the Met Gala, or any number of her other projects, but, just one day before her 27th birthday, the multi-hyphenate actress and host brought her love of fashion to her "motherland"—or, more accurately, her "Father's land"—to attend Dior's Pre-Fall 2023 fashion show in Mumbai, India.
Set under the Gateway of India, an explosion of color and movement signaled the debut of Dior's latest collection, celebrating designer Maria Grazia Chiuri's ongoing relationship with Karishma Swali, head of the Chanakya ateliers and the non-profit Chanakya School of Craft. Inspired by archival pieces designed by Marc Bohan following his 1962 trip to India, this collection is a continuation of that initial dialogue established between the Dior woman and Indian fashion.
While in Mumbai to attend the show, Koshy, who stars in the upcoming film Players, was able to visit the Chanakya School of Craft and meet some of the female artisans working under Swali's tutelage. Though the A Family Affair actress was raised in Houston, TX, her father is from Kerala, India. For her, this show was not just a celebration of Dior, Chanakya, or even India, but of her culture and that of her family. While taking L'OFFICIEL behind-the-scenes on her Dior show day, the Transformers: Rise of the Beasts star details talks "Brown Girl joy," post-show margaritas, and what made her cry (of happiness) from the front row.
"The fuel I'll need to sit down for the entire show."
“Hot and fresh off the presses. Every copy in Mumbai had this Dior spread inside for the big day.”
“Two stunning Dior dresses I stopped myself from stealing. These were on display at the Chanakya School of Craft and were hand-embroidered there by the masters themselves.”
“A master at work. We toured the Chanakya School of Craft hours before the show to witness the hundreds of techniques of these incredible artisans have woven into the collection we'd soon see walking down the runway at the Gateway.”
“A soon-to-be graduate of the Chanakya School of craft, beaming while weaving her final graduation project.”
“Three masters at work. Chanakya's endeavour is to create an environment that is dedicated to women. One that is open, encouraging, and that imparts knowledge to give them the wings to succeed in the real world and be self-sufficient, empowered and independent.”
“Another master at work. My glam Queen and March 31st birthday twin, Mehak Oberoi, let me enjoy the gift of her talent.”
“It's Dior, darling.”
“Brown girl joy on a monumental day in Mumbai.”
“In full bloom in my Motherland… (technically, India would be my Father's land though… shout out to Papa Koshy).”
“The view from my hotel room window of Dior's runway at the Gateway of India. Basically front row from my bed pillow. “
“This beautifully embroidered arch has Chanakya written all over it. The masters created this massive, stunning piece in which the models emerged wearing the 99 looks of the collection.”
“Karishma Swali, founder of Chanakya, beams next to her good friend of 20+ years, Maria Grazia Chiuri right after their long time collaboration was finally presented to the world.”
“Margs in Mumbai. The drinks I needed after a long day of sitting down.”
“Mumbabies! These brown beauties are the reason why I cried front row. Witnessing their walks & their many beautiful shades of brown was the cultural representation that overjoys me to see.”
“The margs kicked in, and I fell down. Glamorously, of course. In Dior, darling.”
