What happens when Kim Kardashian reveals she is on her way to her Skims flagship opening in New York City? Fans and passersby alike pile up outside the tonal-colored store hoping to get a glimpse of the reality star and business mogul. Thursday night, Kardashian arrived to the Midtown Manhattan store on a knee mobility scooter (courtesy of her broken foot) wearing a fitted Chrome Hearts set. It was her first time seeing the store in person, she tells L'OFFICIEL, and it was a dream come true.
"Just being on Fifth Avenue is such a crazy, crazy honor. I don't care where you are in New York, you just have the New York energy. You just feel that when you're [in the city]. I really wanted to bring our Skims world to New York and have the customer come in and feel like maybe they were in a different world when they walked in," she says of the shapewear and lingerie brand's debut flagship.
The Skims store interior is exactly what one may expect of the label, which is known for its minimal color palette, to the liking of Kardashian's own aesthetic taste. The interior mirrors the products' notoriously reserved color palette that leans on neutrals like chocolate brown and sand tans. The storefront, which is located at 647 Fifth Avenue, boasts a massive 6,570 square-foot interior, designed by Rafael de Cárdenas, Ltd. When shoppers enter, they'll first encounter a 15-foot sculpture by Italian-born American contemporary Vanessa Beecroft (who has also photographed Kardashian on numerous occasions and shot Skims campaigns) before exploring three floors and a mezzanine.
"I picked out all of our materials and all of our everything, from the hangers to the bays where all of our clothes are in and the bras and underwear that you open up," she says. Kardashian wanted shoppers to feel immersed in something otherworldly when they step in, which is achieved through the towering Beecroft statue and consistency of the interior. It almost feels like her home, she jokes, but hers is "a little warmer with the rugs and all the flowers and stuff that I warm up my home with that wouldn't be great for a store."
Inside, the store is stocked with the brand's full range of permanent collections—like the Fits Everybody and Cotton lines—as well as limited edition drops (like the holiday shop items) and recent collaborations. For anyone curious about the Skims x Dolce&Gabbana or Skims x The North Face drops, now you can try them on and shop the products in-person.
"The reason I really love a minimalistic lifestyle is because everything is really simple and... there's a lot going on in the world. There's a lot going on in New York. So when you're outside, that's where it can all happen, but when you're inside my home, when you're inside my Skims store, I want you to feel clarity. I want you to feel the confidence that you don't need all that outside noise. That's in our in our fabrics, in our products, our art design, the way that I design our bras, everything," Kardashian adds, while balancing on her knee scooter, from which a tiny tan Chrome Hearts bag dangled.
The $4 billion-value brand, which Kardashian co-founded alongside Jens Grede, hosted a party on the eve of the grand opening, with Skimspressos (espresso martinis), delicately displayed truffles, a photo booth, and an assortment of many mushroom-containing hors d'œuvres, and so much more. "I'm freaking the fuck out," she tells L'OFFICIEL of her excitement on the store opening and eagerness to welcome guests.
No Kardashian party would be complete without a truly star-studded guest list, especially when filming for the next season of Keeping Up With the Kardashians. Throughout the night, fans outside only got more excited as stars in fashion and entertainment strutted in past the towering body statue. Cardi B joined in a flowing leopard print dress. Ice Spice went with a fitted look of the same print, just like Teyana Taylor and Paris Hilton. Singers like Tate McRae and Coco Jones donned luxurious furs. "From the brand's inception, we envisioned physical stores as an integral part of our business model. The success of our pop-ups and partnerships with trusted retail partners allowed us to refine our approach and learn what truly resonates with our customers," Skims CEO Grede added in a press release. "This flagship store is the culmination of those learnings, offering an unparalleled experience where customers can fully immerse themselves in the world of Skims.”
The Skims NYC store is open daily, with standard hours from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern Time.
