How to Wear Overalls This Summer

The comfortable and baggy silhouettes of the '90s are revived—yet again—in this latest one-piece style trend.

There's no question—the late-'90s/Y2K trend is in full effect this summer. From absurdly baggy bottoms to the era-defining off-duty model loafer, and even a rekindled love for suit vests— overalls are the logical next step in fashion's throwback love affair. As a backlash against the constricting flared jeans and bellbottoms of the late '60s and '70s—both in menswear and womenswear—'90s fashion found itself grounded in comfort. Now, with skinny jeans facing the end of their reign, the practical fashion movement has yet again resurfaced reviving this iconic one-piece.

Overalls are eliminating the outfit coordination crisis. Rather than indecisively struggle to match top to bottom, this utilitarian staple banishes these styling struggles as a wardrobe workhorse. For a more understated look, simply layer with a basic white t-shirt. Or—as Heidi Klum seems to have figured out—make a street style statement with print, color, and attitude. On colder summer nights, overalls allow for the perfect layering opportunity with a sweater or vest. Dungarees certainly lean into versatility, and with summer just beginning, this low-maintenance piece appears to have enduring appeal. Here, L'OFFICIEL takes a closer look at influencers and celebrities embracing this must-have wardrobe staple.
