On the 2022 runways and red carpet, we saw the revival of an unexpected trend: hooded dresses. Amidst sheer dresses, bare midriffs, daring cutouts, and plunging corsets, celebrities declared hooded dresses as a fashion favorite. Throughout 2022, at nearly every special event you could count on at least one celebrity rocking the trend; Bella Hadid at the Emerge Gala Dinner and Live Charity Auction; Alexa Demie and Taylor Russell in London; Margot Robbie at the premiere of Babylon; Katie Holmes at the Tom Ford Spring/Summer 2023 runway show

Hooded dresses are not new to the fashion scene. The silhouette has been utilized throughout history, with origins that can go back for centuries. From its luxurious appeal during the Renaissance to its cultural and religious practicality in the Middle East, hooded dresses have always held a certain level of attention. In Western culture, the garment most popularly is referenced back to the '80s, when Grace Jones famously wore a purple hooded Alaïa dress in the 1985 film A View To Kill (and would go on to wear that same outfit for the Alaïa Spring/Summer 1986 Haute Couture show). But it wasn't just Alaïa that spearheaded the popularity of hooded dresses throughout the decade—the garment was also supported by the likes of Yves Saint Laurent, who presented its signature hooded “capuche” pieces in the mid-1980s.

The reclaimed popularity of hooded dresses goes beyond the red carpet and onto the runways. For the Spring/Summer 2023 season, labels such as Saint Laurent, Schiaparelli, and Halpern all ran with their own interpretation of hooded dresses. Rather recently, Anne Hathaway stunned in a gold hooded Versace dress while attending a Bulgari event in Venice and Doja Cat wore a custom Oscar de la Renta gown at the 2023 Met Gala, proving that the garment is here to stay. As we continue to awe over the hooded dresses donned throughout the year, L'OFFICIEL looks at celebrities' top hooded dress fashion moments.
