Following the smash hit success of Challengers, Taylor Swift's ultra-chic tennis-inspired look from the viral "Fortnight" challenge, and the revival of the tenniscore aesthetic online, the sport has re-emerged as one of the trendiest pastimes of recent months—although, with top-tier athletes like Serena Williams and Rafael Nadal dominating the courts in the past decade, did the hype ever really die down? While alternative racket sports like pickleball and kadima have surfaced as activities parallel to tennis, neither truly compares to the timeless allure of tennis, both in terms of aesthetic and global popularity.

Tennis has long presented a wealth of inspiration for luxury houses, as the sport's uniforms offer designers opportunities to infuse their own aesthetics and design philosophies into court-ready attire. Gucci, in particular, has enjoyed a long relationship with tennis, tracing its roots all the way back to the 1970s, when ready-to-wear apparel along with footwear and accessories suitable for athletes first emerged. The Tennis 1977 shoe, which was one of the first sneakers created by a luxury label, was popularized during this era and has since risen to cult-classic status.

In 2024, Gucci continues its enduring link to tennis. Drawing from the Italian house's archival tennis styles from the '70s and '80s, creative director Sabato de Sarno reimagined many of the brand's most iconic athletic styles for a contemporary consumer.

Although tennis uniforms tend to skew fairly simple, the innate grace, elegance, and strength in the sport's attire offer luxury brands plenty of inspiration to work with—especially for a house like Gucci, where the codes and philosophies of design align seamlessly with the pared-back, but emblematic attire.

Ahead of the official June 2024 launch of Gucci's latest line of minimalistic tennis attire, explore the pleated tennis skirts, crisp white collared tops, and polished racket bags that the collection has to offer.
