This morning, Givenchy has become the latest luxury house to announce major changes in creative leadership, naming Matthew M. Williams as their new creative director. The American designer will be responsible for both men’s and women’s collections succeeding former creative director Claire Waight Keller, effective immediately.

The French fashion house is also the latest company to embrace the trend of incorporating successful streetwear designers to oversee the creative direction for major luxury brands. Long-time collaborator to Williams, Virgil Abloh was appointed as the artistic director of Louis Vuitton’s menswear in 2018. Williams, the founder of the streetwear label 1017 ALYX 9SM will continue to oversee his brand independently while preparing to show his first collection for Givenchy this October in Paris. On his vision for the future of Givenchy, Williams shared, “In these unprecedented times for the world, I want to send a message of hope, together with my community and colleagues, and intend to contribute towards positive change.”
