With the taxing year that we've all had, calling attention to mental health is more important than ever. The month of May marked Mental Health Awareness Month, created to destigmatize mental illness and educate the public about mental health and wellness. As the month comes to a close, here are a few brands that used their platform to bring attention to mental health awareness this May.

Rare Beauty

Helmed by actress, singer, and producer Selena Gomez, Rare Beauty sought to bring awareness to mental health issues with their #MentalHealth101 campaign. Throughout the month, the brand made educational posts with statistics on mental health, recruited experts to share videos on the topic, and encouraged their followers to donate to the brand's philanthropy, Rare Impact Fund.

Philosophy

Known for their delicious smelling skincare and thought-provoking packaging, Philosophy's Hope and Grace Initiative has been committed to supporting mental health since 2014. The initiative has donated $5.4 million, given 91 grants, and supported 1.8 million women since its inception.

Kate Spade

Since the tragic death of the brand's late founder, Kate Spade's charity foundation has donated $1 million annually to a variety of organizations. This past year, the brand chose to give grants to mental health organizations, including the Crisis Text Line, Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services, The Fountain House, and more.

Madhappy

Launched in 2017 to open up conversations about mental health, loungewear brand Madhappy has done more than just make cute sweatshirts. The brand's philanthropic mission, The Local Optimist, strives to provide mental health resources and create a dialogue about mental wellness. The Local Optimist also has a hotline for supporting the community.

Zadig & Voltaire

French luxury brand Zadig & Voltaire has used the power of fashion to call attention to mental health awareness. Launched last year in light of pandemic mental health struggles, the brand's Art Is Hope campaign has collaborated with a myriad of artists on capsule collections with the aim of uplifting people during such difficult times. In honor of the initiative's one-year anniversary, Zadig & Voltaire reached out to the National Alliance On Mental IllnessBlack Art In America, and L.A. Dance Project to see how their donations and campaign have impacted the different philanthropies.

Leret Leret

In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, luxury cashmere label Leret Leret will donate 25% of sales to The LoveLand Foundation, an organization that provides financial support for Black women of all ages seeking mental health resources like counseling through its Therapy Fund. The brand also launched two new crewneck sweaters in honor of the pledge.

The Local Love Club

Celebrity stylist Maeve Reilley started The Local Love Club with a mission of "making kindness cool." To follow through on this promise, a percentage of every sale is donated to the anti-bullying organization Kind Campaign. In addition, each piece from the brand's collection is imbued with an uplifting message for both the person wearing it and those around them.

Kenneth Cole

New York-based clothing brand Kenneth Cole has had a long history of standing up for important social causes, such as supporting gun reform, encouraging safe sex, and standing up for women's rights. This month, the brand supported mental health awareness with their Mental Health Coalition, launched in 2020. The movement is composed of individuals and brands that work towards destigmatizing mental health and giving access to resources.
