This season, designers are falling over garments that incorporate strategic drapery and convey a sense of unrestrained volume and movement, lauding female liberation.
Much like the warm-weather, stretchy wrap dress popularized by Diane Von Furstenburg in the 1970s for its ability to betray self-assurance, the edgier contemporary variants of the iconic wrap silhouette and artful asymmetric pieces usher a new era of strength and self-aware irreverence. Elegant draping equals power.
Fashion houses have seamlessly incorporated antithetical themes of restraint and ostentatiousness. Impeccably tailored sweaters, capes, coats, and Grecian dresses designed with luxuriously soft blends inject a refined appeal to your wardrobe. Meanwhile, silhouettes with ruched detailing and unbridled fluidity, rendered in various tones, evoke a dual attitude of buoyancy and resilience and allow you to synchronize with fall’s inherent lack of subtlety.
In their Fall/Winter 2024 collections, designers re-imagined the wrap detailing with enticing contorted shapes and a newfound sensibility. Burberry’s sleek ultra-high collared wrap coats evoked both dignity and nonchalance, making the classic silhouette feel novel. Max Mara also debuted a refreshingly brash upgrade on a beloved classic with a crepe blazer that had a twist front detail for dimension. Meanwhile, Dior’s Ancient Greek-inspired, dreamy goddess dresses paired with sweeping capes permitted breathability while endorsing one’s prerogative to accentuate the figure in chillier conditions. (Add a pair of Fisherman’s sandals for the perfect summer-to-fall transitional outfit!) Ferragamo also harnessed lightweight viscose material to create a nicely-fitted, sophisticated-yet-cheeky jersey turtleneck dress with a descending tulip skirt that swayed freely like the fall breeze.
