L'HISTOIRE explores fashion history moments you should know, from what actors wore on a red carpet to celebrities who made cameos on the runway. Some are unsung, and some are better known. Each is part of the fabric of today’s fashion world, be it barrier breakers or culture makers.

While Drew Barrymore famously embraced the '90s grunge look during the rebellious chapters of her life, she also knew how to fashionably welcome a softer, more feminine side. Such was true in 1998, when the actor attended an Ever After gala at the Palazzo Corsini in Rome while promoting her film of the same name. She appeared as enchanting as a fairytale, thanks to her Renaissance-inspired gown. For years, however, the dress' designer evaded fashion connoisseurs.

Speculation went back and forth about whether it was by John Galliano or Ferragamo. Finally, in October 2024, Vogue confirmed Ferragamo designed the gown (after years of it being credited to Galliano, during the same era he was the creative director for Dior). The Italian fashion brand also made Barrymore's shoes for the evening which, like her dress, were Renaissance-inspired. The then-23-year-old actor paired the dress with a necklace, which appears to include a purple gem in the middle and no other accessories. She opted for a messy updo and a red lip, adding a sultry touch to the fairytale look.

The Florentine fashion house also provided some of the Ever After costumes that made it to the silver screen. Jenny Beavan, the costume designer for the film, successfully reached out to the Ferragamo team to collaborate on designs and ideas for the film. The iconic glass slippers seen in the movie are, for example, the Italian label's contribution.

To achieve Barrymore's look with a contemporary spin, wear something with artful and noticeable patterns. Go for Balmain's Sky-Print Cowl-neck Minidress paired with Sophia Webster's very sparkly Paloma Sandal, which features a crystal butterfly heel to enhance the enchanting aesthetic. An amethyst and diamond pendant will add a sense of nostalgia to the look.

When looking back at the '90s, it's difficult not to think about a pop culture icon who made a name for herself during this defining time, Barrymore. Barrymore started as a child actor when she had her breakout role in E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, directed by the great Steven Spielberg in 1982. Since then, she's become an established actor in Hollywood, director, producer, businesswoman, and talk show host of The Drew Barrymore Show. Sure, she's had a successful career, but she's also had some iconic fashion moments. This Ferragamo dress, no doubt, is one of them.
