As winter fully takes hold, it's getting harder and harder to slip mini skirts and shorts into the outfit rotation. It may, finally, be time to give into long pants. Denim jeans are a constant in terms of cold weather apparel. They never truly go out of style, though certain cuts and colors come and go. Not all jeans can make the transition from summer to winter with you, either. Those excessively ripped jeans that expose your knees and or thighs might best be stored away until the sun comes out again.

So which pairs of jeans should you have on hand this winter? We've got a few suggestions on what to shop and where.

Dark Denim

It's somewhat of a given that dark and clouded skies bring dark and stormy colors back into fashion. Though wearing ultra-light wash denim in the winter would be a statement, dark wash or black denim is your safest bet for pulling off a chic snowy season. Dark colors also retain the most heat, though it's deabtable whether that rule holds true for denim.

Flash of Fun

One side effect of those warm, all-encompasing coats that winter requires is that every outdoor outfit looks about the same. All your clothes get covered by that one long, wool garment. As an act of resistance, consider picking out a pair of jeans with a bit of fun around the ankles. Whether it's an exaggerated cuff or flare, or a pop of color, letting something funky peek out from your winter wear can shake up routine.

Fleece Lined

Not to sound like your mother, but sometimes the best clothing is also the warmest. Fleece or flannel lined pants can be a lifesaver if you live in a truly frozen tundra. Looking at you, Chicago. Unfortunately, the designer brands seem to have bought into the idea that fashion is suffering, and refuse to offer a pair of these cozy jeans. To buy them, you may have to enter the realm of workwear. Luckily, brands like Carhartt and Dickies are increasingly trendy (and therefore catering to a stylish audience). Here are a couple options.
