11 Cringeworthy Fashion Trends to Reconsider

Once considered irredeemable, these fashion trends are on the rise.

While most trends ebb and flow in and out of style every few decades, there are also those few cringeworthy looks that no one wants to see return, however we might be changing our minds. Whether it's looking undecided in a dress over pants or showcasing it all in a barely-there mini-skirt, these are the runway looks that were received with mixed reviews, but might actually be worth trying out. To reminisce on the bold fashion looks (or, to some, mistakes) of yester-year, check out these 11 polarizing trends that are making a come back.

Dresses Over Jeans

If you're wearing a dress, why not wear pants? If you want to wear pants, why not wear a dress? Some don't see it as the best of both worlds–– but this JW Anderson Fall/Winter 2019 look puts that to rest–– even Bella Hadid gave it her seal of approval.

Within the jorts (jean shorts) family, denim Bermuda shorts are the less cool cousin of denim cutoffs that are as awkward in their length as they are in their tight fit. However, with the right styling, this piece can be made a wardrobe staple. On the Off-White Spring/Summer 2019 runway, Virgil Abloh went as far as making a gray Canadian tuxedo with a pair.

Moon Boots

Designers throughout history have often found inspiration from the Space Age, creating streamlined and modern fashion. Moon boots were met with extremely mixed reactions, but in the age of chunky boots, they're the perfect addition to the right outfit, even Chanel and Jeremy Scott put their spin on the clunky footwear.

In the early aughts, everyone from Beyoncé to Christina Aguilera rocked bedazzled jeans, and it seems that the embellished jean trend is finally coming back from the dead. (Its revival has been attempted many times over the years, as exemplified by Dolce & Gabbana Spring/Summer 2015.) It will be interesting to see the longevity of this trend, but for now it's here to stay.

Chaps

The Wild West is everywhere- from cow print to cowboy hats to cowboy boots. If you wanna take this trend further- try a pair of chaps!  Even Kim Kardashian has sported the divisive trend.

Calling Kevin Federline! The bedazzled shirts you thought were lost to time are back! With new creative director Kevin Christiana, Ed Hardy is taking it to new heights, even given the seal of approval by the likes of Addison Rae and Bella Hadid.

Ruffled Mini Skirts

The ruffled mini skirt had its time in the sun and now its back, to some people's dismay. The revival of the mini-skirt also includes these pieces, and Isabel Marant showed that it can still be done well.

Thigh High Ugg Boots

A beloved piece of anti-fashion, Ugg boots make up for their lack of style with shearling warmth. This collaboration between Y/Project and Ugg was met with apprehension, and for good reason. But when Rihanna was spotted in them at Coachella in 2018, many began to change their tune.

High-Low Skirts

In essense, the high-low skirt can be done tastefully, like this look from Versace's Spring/Summer 2018 collection, but in reality it's one of the tougher trends to reconsider. Everyone remembers the bright, sheer high-low skirts of the early 2010s, probably worn with a sleeveless, collared button down and Converse. It hurts to think about, but there are ways to do it right.

Floral Crochet Ponchos

The crochet poncho revival happens ever so often as the boho chic look comes around the trend cycle again, as evidenced by this Emilio Pucci Spring/Summer 2015 look. With the meteoric rise of crochet as of late, this trend is something to watch out for.

Super Mini Skirt

We all know the Miu Miu micro-skirt that shook the world and remember Kate Moss looking flawless in this Vivienne Westwood Spring/Summer 1995 skirt. The boundary-pushing version of the classsic mini skirt leaves little to the imagination. Although walking out in one of these is just asking for a wardrobe malfunction of the highest order, they have become the hottest trend of the season.
