Chanel's Next Métiers d'Art Show Will Be at the Met

After replicating Paris in the Grand Palais for Haute Couture Fall 2018, Karl Lagerfeld is right back to look across the world for Chanel inspiration. The brand’s next Métiers d’Art show, set for December 4, is coming to New York for what’s sure to be an over-the-top affair at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Lagerfeld started showing Chanel’s Métiers d’Art collections in 2002, in an effort to showcase the brand’s specialty couture ateliers. The annual event occurs during the Pre-Fall season and travels to a new city each year. Last year, the German creative director headed home to Hamburg, and the Met event marks another familiar territory, as Chanel was the subject of the museum’s costume exhibition 13 years ago. Chanel has a long love story with America, starting with its namesake founder, Coco. She first visited New York in 1931, and U.S. department stores were some of her earliest supporters. Lagerfeld loves the city’s energy too, and this will be his third time using it as inspiration, following a 2005 Métiers d’Art show at Chanel’s 57th street boutique and a 2006 cruise romp through Grand Central Terminal.

Following a time of uncertainty as New York brands like Altuzarra, Rodarte and Proenza Schouler left the city’s fashion week for Paris, 2018 has seen several European brands take interest in the American city. Bottega Veneta held a one-off Fall 2018 event at the American Stock Exchange to celebrate their new Madison Avenue flagship, Prada’s Cruise 2019 collection debuted on West 52nd Street, and Anthony Vaccarello staged his first menswear show for Saint Laurent at Liberty State Park, just across the Hudson from the Manhattan skyline. With Chanel headed to the Met in December, the future continues to look brighter for the city that never sleeps.
