12 Celebrities Who Have Bags Named After Them
From Alexa Chung to Princess Diana, discover the celebrities who inspired designer bags.
The ultimate feat in being a fashion icon is getting a bag named after you. Sure, being a muse is fun, but a namesake bag that will live on past your time in the spotlight is the biggest honor. Brands like Gucci and Hermès are best known for the bags named after celebrities. From Grace Kelly to Lana Del Rey, here are some of the celebrities who have had a bag named after them.
The Hermès Birkin, named after Jane Birkin
The Hermès Birkin bag is the most sought-after bag in the fashion industry, with some versions of it selling for hundreds of thousands of dollars. But the ultimate it-bag has very humble beginnings. Jane Birkin was sitting next to Jean-Louis Dumas (the Hermès executive chairman at the time) on a flight, lamenting about how difficult it's been to find a bag that fits her needs as a young mother. Dumas designed the bag on the spot and named it after Birkin when it came to production.
The Hermès Kelly, named after Grace Kelly
Though very similar in looks to the Hermès Birkin, the Kelly wasn't created with Grace Kelly specifically in mind. The Kelly bag originated in the '30s but was renamed in the '50s when Grace Kelly was photographed concealing her pregnancy with the bag.
The Christian Dior Lady Dior, named after Princess Diana
Originally named the Chouchou bag, Dior renamed this quilted classic in 1996 after Princess Diana was spotted with it. Legend has it, Lady Diana abandoned her Chanel bags once she found out about Prince Charles and Camilla Parker-Bowles as the interlocking C logo reminded her of them.
The Gucci Diana, named after Princess Diana
Princess Diana's style was so iconic that she had more than one bag named after her. Nearly 20 years after Lady Di stepped out with the iconic bamboo handle tote, Gucci brought the bag out of the archives and reimagined it for a 2021 release.
The Gucci Jackie 1961, named after Jackie Kennedy
Another reinvention from Gucci's archives is the Jackie 1961 bag, named after Jackie Kennedy. The hobo-style bag was originally named the Fifties Constance, but when Kennedy started wearing it out in the '70s, it became the Jackie. Just like the Diana, Gucci Creative Director Alessandro Michele re-designed this bag with a modern twist.
The Marc Jacobs Stam, named after Jessica Stam
Marc Jacobs was so taken with model Jessica Stam that he named a bag after her. Debuting in 2005 the Stam became an immediate It bag carried by everyone from Beyoncé to Lindsay Lohan. Though the bag is now retired and hasn't had its revival you can shop them on secondhand sites for a fraction of the original price.
The Mulberry Alexa, named after Alexa Chung
Not unlike the Marc Jacobs Stam bag, the Alexa bag was the It Bag of the 2010s. Inspired by fashion icon Alexa Chung's street style (and her vintage Mulberry Elkington briefcase she was often pictured with) the Alexa bag was the perfect slouchy everyday bag. As seen on celebrities like Blake Lively and Sarah Jessica Parker (and even Blair Waldorf in Gossip Girl) the bag quickly became a street-style staple.
The Mulberry Del Rey, named after Lana Del Rey
Another it girl that got their own Mulberry bag was Lana Del Rey. Creative Director at the time, Emma Hill, was such a fan of the singers "Video Games" music video that she designed a bag specifically for her, aptly named the Del Rey. While it came in many colorways when it was available, Del Rey's white ostrich version was made custom for her.
The Jason Wu Diane, named after Diane Kruger
Model-turned-actress, Diane Kruger, served as inspiration for Jason Wu's Diane bag. The sleek '70s style crossbody debuted in the designer's Spring/Summer 2015 runway collection.
The Louis Vuitton SC, named after Sofia Coppola
Unlike most of the other celebrities with bags named after them, Sofia Coppola had a hand in designing her namesake bag. She collaborated with Marc Jacobs, the Creative Director at the time, to create the sophisticated SC bag in 2010, inspired by the Louis Vuitton Speedy and Keepall.
The Gabriela Hearst Nina, named after Nina Simone
Named after artist and activist Nina Simone, the Gabriela Hearst Nina became an instant It Bag. The unique round bag has been worn by celebrities such as Meghan Markle and Gillian Anderson.
The Gabriela Hearst Demi, named after Demi Moore
When Demi Moore asked Gabriela Hearst to make her a custom smaller version of the Nina bag to wear to Princess Eugenie's wedding, she obliged, even going so far as to name it after her.
