Adding both intrigue and uniqueness, black diamond rings have made their mark in the world of celebrity jewelry.

Tuesday night after attending Charli XCX’s Brat show in Brooklyn, lead singer of The 1975, Matty Healy announced with Gabbriette Bechtel that they are engaged. Bechtel shared photos of herself wearing a black diamond ring which was surrounded by pavé diamonds which also adorned the band. The couple have been together since September 2023, when they were first photographed kissing, hugging and holding hands in New York City. A few days later, the pair was seen together at an event in Brooklyn, and shortly after, Healy had confirmed he was in a relationship.

The Symbolism Behind Engagement Rings

While engagement rings have been around since Ancient Rome, it wasn’t until De Beers' advertising campaign in the late 1930s that traditional diamond engagement rings became the symbol of marriage. In 1947, De Beers launched its classic slogan, “A Diamond is Forever,” and the durability of a diamond conveyed the message that marriage is eternal. A diamond’s purity and sparkle has now come to symbolize the profound commitment between people.

Bechtel is not the first celebrity to flaunt a black diamond. Arguably one of the reasons why they may have skyrocketed in popularity in the first place may be due to Sarah Jessica Parker’s character, Carrie Bradshaw. Parker’s character wore a striking 5-carat black diamond engagement ring when Mr. Big proposed in Sex and the City, and this iconic piece set the trend for unconventional engagement rings.

Other celebrities including Carmen Electra and Kat Von D have also sported black diamond rings. Electra’s engagement ring is a 2-carat black diamond set in a six-prong setting anchored in a diamond pave band valued at $100,000. Von D was given her ring by then-fiancé DJ Deadmau5 in 2012 which suited her unique taste. It featured a black diamond center flanked by a pair of skulls on the sides and a double-banded shank accented with small black diamonds.

The Difference Between Black and White Diamonds

Black diamonds are only found in Brazil and the Central African Republic, however they can also be created in a lab. They are formed from carbon and graphite as they are meant to be meteorites. Unlike white diamonds where light is reflected to show brilliance depending on the cut and clarity, black diamonds absorb more light which gives them an opaque look.

One main difference between colorless diamonds and black diamonds is the number of inclusions or imperfections. These are responsible for giving black diamonds their color. It can be very challenging to cut black diamonds since they are easily breakable, meaning high-quality cuts can be expensive. Although black diamonds don't reflect light the way other diamonds do, a good cut can add some sparkle. However, black diamonds are cheaper than white diamonds which is due in part to black diamonds being created in a laboratory since natural ones are very rare. Black diamonds serve as a reminder that, like them, love is unique and distinct in its own way.
