The Row Fall 2020 Proves Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen are Seasoned Fashion Experts
Effortlessness, ease, and minimalism are three words that undoubtedly describe fashion-favorite brand The Row. But how can a label that's been consistently honing in on its signature understated aesthetic for over a decade (in fact, this show marks the brand's 10th anniversary at New York Fashion Week) keep an increasingly demanding audience engaged? For designers Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, the answer seems to be as simple as it is clear: maintain authenticity at all costs.
This New York Fashion Week, many fashion show-goers were won over by maximalist show productions, lofty venues, glitter, and bold color palettes. But the Olsens didn't let that faze them, instead sticking to what they do best for The Row Fall 2020: pushing their collection forward while maintaining their core design pillars of expert tailoring, innovative styling, and oversized but efficient silhouettes. In fact, attendees could be overheard raving about the efficiency of the show and how not only did it start on time, but the audience was in and out in about 14 minutes flat: an unheard of and extremely rare occurence at any fashion show.
A rather bare-bones venue dressed with iron sculpture pieces by late artist Beverly Pepper served as the background at the 9 am show on an ominous rainy Monday morning. Gigi Hadid opened the show in a three-piece suit with rolled-up sleeves, no shirt necessary. The 32 looks that followed all flowed down the catwalk with a similar stream of consciousness. Major themes included layered suiting, oversized everything (from trousers to blazers to coats), turtlenecks styled under button-up collared shirts, and models wearing two coats for extra fall warmth.
While color pairings were mostly tonal and monochrome, a few looks featured pops of cobalt under coats while a few others incorporated unexpected accents in brown. The accessories, which have won the Olsens CFDA awards three times (in addition to their two for womenswear design), provided well-curated detail throughout the collection. Prominent standouts included elbow-length knit gloves and oversized clutch handbags.
With their latest collection, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen proved that in a new decade, they still know The Row woman like the backs of their hands. Thanks to easy-to-wear pieces that never compromise style, expressing both sophistication and individuality through their modern minimalism, the collection is a standout at New York Fashion Week that's sure to enter many stylish women's closets come Fall 2020.
