Emma Corrin and Mia Goth Hit the Runway at Miu Miu's Fall/Winter 2023 Show
Fashion favorites Emma Corrin and Mia Goth are embracing underwear as outerwear in Miu Miu's Fall/Winter 2023 collection
"I can buy flowers myself." Miuccia Prada may have thought of Miley Cyrus' latest hit when she thought of the magnificent floral applications on the dresses we saw on the catwalk in the Miu Miu Fall/Winter 2023 presentation. While we can't say for certain, the fashion show—like the song—which showed one day before International Women's Day, was a hymn to female independence and the contemporary woman, while still being inclusive to all genders inclined towards dressing femme.
The show centered on themes of independence, self-awareness, and pride: a certain—and, as always, ironic—stance towards fashion against a glossy industry at all costs, perhaps forgetting the functional character on the one hand and the emancipatory character of dressing on the other. That unkempt hair and the nonchalance of carrying house keys as if these models had just come home from a party, an exhausting day's work, or a late-night hookup are above all a plastic political message: this collection is by and for women, however you choose to define it.
Prada does not give up on the ugly chic that characterizes her aesthetic imagery. Here, she leaned into sheer tights that reach over the clothes (like when you leave the bathroom in a hurry and forget to check your skirt), as if to say, "Don't take yourself too seriously." And then there were the culottes—which, on occasion, feature flashy jewels— and glasses á la The Devil Wears Prada or Ugly Betty.
The skirts are midi or micro (even more micro than the ones we've seen in recent seasons) and coordinated with pullovers, herringbone coats, and spongey leather jackets. Many sporty looks: leggings, yoga suits, sweatshirts, and sneakers peep out here and there in a fashion show that saw Emma Corrin, Mia Goth, Ethel Cain, and Zaya Wade take to the catwalk.
