Louis Vuitton’s Fall/Winter 2024 Collection Celebrates Ghesquière’s Past and Future
Marking 10 years at Louis Vuitton, Nicolas Ghesquière creates a collection that's a callback to his past and a celebration of his continued future as creative director.
With Nicolas Ghesquière celebrating 10 years at Louis Vuitton, his Fall/Winter 2024 show is an ode to his past. As he did at his debut, Ghesquière left a typewritten note to the thousands of guests who attended his show at the Cour Carrée du Louvre. In the note, he writes, “This joy is still here. Ten years later, this evening is a new dawn.”
And a new dawn it is, as Ghesquière's contract extension was made official in November. While this collection celebrates his tenure thus far, for Ghesquière, evolution is key. Like any great designer, Ghesquière doesn’t allow himself to be jaded by his past successes; instead, he makes sure to design each collection like it's his first. Through this collection, it's clear that he made looks celebrating his revered vision from the past while also honoring his commitment to creating fashion for the future.
Similar to his debut collection, metallic prints, leather-featured looks, and feather accents made an appearance, but while his Fall/Winter 2014 collection had notes of the 2010s like the oh-so-loved A-line skirts and skinny pants, his current collection employs silhouettes and designs in keeping with 2024. This can be seen in the numerous sheer pieces, the loose-fitted leather trousers, as well as some oversized knit pieces and flamboyant fur coats. The futuristic geometric cuts and prints, as well as the silver and ice blue looks that were presented, may hint at what Ghesquière wants Louis Vuitton's future to look like. Being the creative director of a French fashion house, it's clear Ghesquière doesn't try to pigeonhole French fashion; rather, with each collection, he lets us into a different interpretation of what French fashion could look like.
In the future, French fashion may lean away from the qualities people usually prescribe it with, and Louis Vuitton's latest collection may have just defined what that might look like. The brand will continue to have a dazzling future, and Nicolas Ghesquière is here to tell everyone that its future success is safe with him.
