Catwalk On Wheels: Inclusivity is the Highlight of Fashion Week
Find out which brands shined at representation on the catwalk.
The year is 2021, and the catwalks of international fashion weeks represented many diverse communities. There were white, Black, Hispanic, and Asian models, cis and trans, small and curvy bodies—and even disabled models. This season we witnessed a lot of progress within the realm of fashion and representation, all thanks to brands like Moschino and Pretty Little Thing, as well as collaborations from Faduma's Fellowship X Harriet Eccleston that also made history at London Fashion Week, giving classes in representation by including physically disabled models in the casting.
The first highlight goes to Aaron Philip, a black, trans, and disabled model, who shined on the Moschino by Jeremy Scott catwalk, bringing the Y2K vibe to the spotlight for another season.
Also at New York fashion week, Pretty Little Thing invited TikToker Mya brought her wheels to the catwalk. Then in London, Faduma Farah, a mother of two who has paralysis from the neck down, financed a collection of exclusive clothing for people with disabilities through her collaboration with Harriet Eccleston.
The global movement has inspired brands like Nike, which created the Go FlyEasy sneaker model that lets you put on the shoes without the use of your hands, to make fashion more accessible. The great rise of Paralympic sports has impacted activewear brands that today have exclusive areas within the style department, developing functional pieces with the help of more and more funky and adaptable zippers.
