Alexander McQueen’s Fall/Winter 2024 Show Proves That a New Era Is Underway

Alexander McQueen’s Fall/Winter 2024 collection marked Seán McGirr’s debut. McGirr was appointed as the brand’s creative director last October. With an impressive resume that includes experience at Burberry, Dries van Noten, and JW Anderson, the Dublin-born designer came into the role with the goal of infusing contemporary influences with the fashion house's storied heritage.

The collection leans into a gothic-like aesthetic with glossy black looks, sharp silhouettes, and a brooding tone that gives it a certain edge. Alexander McQueen, known for his theatrically brilliant designs, was no stranger to macabre and high-drama fashion. It’s clear McGirr sways towards that a bit with the animal-esque footwear and the avant-garde boxy sweaters.

The interesting use of animal print, as seen in the shredded sleeveless hoodie and the knee-length fluffy trousers, was quirky and unique to McGirr’s vision for the brand. It seems that McGirr has brought over some influences he’s picked up at JW Anderson. There’s a playfulness to the collection that the brand hasn’t quite seen before. Sarah Burton offered up designs that were generally in line with McQueen's aesthetic, but it should be noted that while Burton and McQueen worked together, McGirr did not. He’s adding his spin to the brand, creating a new era for Alexander McQueen. It’ll be exciting to see how his vision for the fashion house progresses. While the audience may not be used to his aesthetics at first, McGirr might just make an influential mark on the brand’s history.
