What Is Conservative Girl Makeup? Explaining the TikTok Trend on Republican Makeup
TikTok's latest viral beauty tutorial is less based on technique as it is about political satire.
Forget tips on how to get flawless skin and apply the perfect winged eyeliner. TikTok's latest beauty obsession is a tutorial type that's less based on technique as it is political satire. Both before and after its about 12-hour long outage, users on the app have been making beauty content that roasts and pokes fun at today's political climate, with a focus on less-than-perfect makeup looks coming from Republican women. The beauty trend has gained virality on the app, with many TikTok users having a heyday pointing out errors in the makeup routines and products conservative women vouch for, even going as far as making their own tutorials on how to achieve the look. Enter: conservative girl makeup.
What Is Conservative Girl Makeup?
Conservative girl makeup is a beauty trend going viral on TikTok that’s more based on humor than products or techniques. Instead, users are pointing out that those who typically are more politically right-leaning tend to have a noticeably similar makeup routine. The conservative girl, according to TikTok users, chronically picks a foundation that doesn't match their skin tone, or someone whose spray tan is the wrong hue.
"Now I have cool undertones in my skin, meaning reddish, pinkish undertones, so we want to choose a makeup that doesn't match the undertones, so, I'm going in with my warmest foundation," TikTok creator Suzanne Lambert jokes in her tutorial. Her videos have been some of the most popular within the Republican and conservative girl makeup roasts.
The final touch of the conservative girl makeup is a single line of black crayon eyeliner on the top of the eyelid, paired with clumpy mascara. To top it off, tutorials recommend grabbing a bright red lipstick. (There are bonus points if said lipstick doesn't match the overall outfit.) Some users have gone even further by rounding up a list of makeup products that just scream “major conservative energy,” like TikTok creator Niko Haagenson who made a video naming a list of beauty items.
How Did the Trend Start?
The trend seems to have gained momentum in late 2024, but following the 2025 inauguration, social media users are diving even deeper into trolling the looks of key conservative figures. Influencers from both the political and beauty spheres are offering tongue-in-cheek commentary on the trend’s aesthetic rigidity, blending humor with critique.
With President Donald Trump’s return to the White House this past Monday, the inauguration provided even more fodder for discussion on the appearance of a conservative woman. All eyes were on those in the Trump family who stepped out in a series of outfits with many custom-made by top fashion designers, like Ivanka Trump's Oscar de la Renta dress. These moments sparked heated debates and controversy online about why fashion is now embracing the family, opposite to its behavior years ago. It's also fanning the flames on satire related to beauty and politics online.
