7 Secrets to Get the Most From Your Beauty Sleep
In honor of National Sleep Day, here are L'OFFICIEL's best tips and tricks to take care of your skin while you sleep.
It’s no secret that sleep is an essential ingredient to your overall health, appearance, and well-being—a full eight hours per night can truly work wonders. When it comes to skin, however, it is important to know how to truly maximize your sleep time in order to properly take care of your skin.
Throughout the day, our skin is exposed to air pollution, cold and hot air, and much of our stress is expressed through our facial muscles. Long story short, your skin needs and deserves to rest and recover while you do. Additionally, your skin is also able to absorb nutrients and products much better at night, so it is especially important to use the correct products to ensure optimal results. Take a look below to see how we recommend caring for your skin while you’re asleep.
Remove Makeup
This step may seem like an obvious one, but you’d be surprised by how much makeup actually stays on your skin even after you think you took it off. Remaining makeup can cause blemishes, and most importantly, can prevent your skincare products from actually reaching your skin and doing their job. To ensure you’re getting into bed completely makeup-free, we recommend avoiding pre-moistened towelettes and instead, removing makeup with micellar water and a simple cotton pad.
Cleanser
No matter what, this should always be a staple in your nighttime skincare routine. Cleansing your face removes all of the layers of dirt, oil, and anything else that you encountered throughout the day that could clog your pores. To avoid any irritation from harsh products, we always recommend going with a gentle cleanser unless proscribed otherwise by a professional.
Eye Cream
Protecting the sensitive, thin skin around your eyes is an essential step to keep your eye area looking healthy and youthful. Apply a night-specific eye cream, usually heavier than an eye cream you would apply in the morning, around the eye area and let it absorb throughout the night.
Moisturizer
Using a nighttime-specific moisturizer helps to keep your skin hydrated, healthy, and rejuvenated. This may take some time to find the correct moisturizer for your skin, but keep in mind that it should be a bit heavier than the moisturizer you apply in the morning.
Nighttime-Specific Products
Take advantage of the time you don’t need to worry about how your skincare products will sit under your makeup and don’t be afraid of thicker products. Nighttime-specific products are typically heavier than daytime ones, and because of this, it helps the skin to absorb the product over a longer period of time. The feeling may take some getting used to, but we swear the results are worth it.
Silk Pillowcases
Silk pillowcases ensure that you won’t have any facial irritation due to cotton which can happen frequently with regular cotton pillowcases and sheets. Additionally, silk repels moisture which can help keep your products stay on your face throughout the night, instead of ending up on your pillow. If you’re not in the mood to splurge on silk pillowcases, however, make sure to change your pillowcases frequently to avoid bacteria and dirt buildup.
Water Before Bed
Staying hydrated has a huge impact on your skin health, and aside from drinking throughout the day, a simple glass of water before bed can make a big difference. Our bodies, and particularly our skin, lose moisture as we sleep, so this extra hydration before getting into bed can help combat dehydration and its side effects.
