6 Natural Ways To Make Your Hair Grow in 2025
From ingredients that help to styling tips, these expert-approved habits and techniques will promote hair growth.
Struggling to see any real progress in your hair growth journey can be frustrating, especially when it feels like no matter what you do, your hair just won’t budge past a certain length. But the good news is that achieving longer, healthier hair might be easier than you think. Small tweaks to your daily routine, from how you style your hair to the ingredients you use, can make a big difference in supporting growth. L'OFFICIEL tapped two hair experts to share their top natural hair growth tips and some underrated methods for faster growth. By implementing these, you can finally start seeing the results you’ve been hoping for.
It Starts With the Right Daily Habits
To start your hair growth journey, it begins with the little things. Sometimes, a complex routine isn't needed like consistency is. Hair habits can make or break your growth journey. Julissa Prado, founder of Rizos Curls, finds a consistent routine for her hair helps it grow naturally over time: "Personally, I always start my hair routine by applying the Rizos Curls Strength Oil to my ends to combat dryness and prevent breakage," she tells L'OFFICIEL. Prado highly encourages those with colored or bleached hair to do the same. "It’s made with natural essential oils, so it deeply moisturizes and keeps my color-treated hair from becoming brittle."
Tips on Scalp Care
A healthy scalp is crucial to having a healthy head of hair. To achieve this, it's helpful to remove product buildup on the scalp that can block hair from growing as fast or as strong. Sarah Potempa, celebrity hairstylist and CEO and co-founder of The Beachwaver Co., like to massage her brand's marula scalp treatment oil in order to exfoliate and promote blood flow as well.
For those with persistent scalp issues, like itchiness and flakiness, Prado recommends going back to basics. These issues can often arise when someone has "avoided proper scalp cleansing from following viral trends that discouraged shampoo use," she explains. "It’s also vital to recognize that the skin on your scalp, like the rest of your body, can absorb substances into your bloodstream. This is why I’m such a proponent of using natural, high-quality ingredients and being cautious of certain chemicals in products."
Washing Habits and Frequency
When it comes to the question of how often you should be washing your hair, you'll find a different answer with each Google search. That's because everybody's hair is different and needs a different routine. How much you wash your hair comes down to how fast it gets oily. For curlier hair, this takes longer since the oil is slower to travel down the strands. Accordingly, the more straight the hair, the quicker it'll get oily.
"This is one of my most-asked questions, and it really does depend on your scalp, environment and lifestyle," Prado explains. "Factors like how much oil your scalp produces, your hair type, and your daily habits all play a role. For example, if your scalp doesn’t produce much oil, washing once or twice a week might be sufficient. However, if your scalp tends to be oilier or gets dirty more often due to activities or product buildup, you might need to wash more frequently," like once a day or every other day. Growth shampoos can help, too, like Vegamour or Nutrafol's shampoo.
Are Trims Worth It? The Verdict
As counterintuitive as it sounds, getting a trim every few months can help with hair growth, but it doesn't work for everyone at that pace. "This is a bit of a controversial topic because there’s a growing trend of people skipping regular trims, saying their hair grows longer without them. While that might work for some, it really depends on your hair, how you care for your ends, and whether you’re prone to split ends," Prado says. "Personally, I get my hair trimmed every four to six months, but I can stretch it to six months because I prioritize taking care of my ends."
After all, the point of a trim is to get rid of split ends, which can lead to hair damage when the split travels up the hair shaft.
Unexpected Styling Tips
Achieving longer, healthier hair isn’t just about finding the right products; it’s also about making small adjustments to your routine that can have a big impact over time. Potempa advises switching up styling habits to reduce strain on hair. Constant ponytails or buns in the same direction can weaken strands, so alternating styles or taking breaks can help maintain hair strength. In addition to hair-specific routines, it's important to remember that other things play a role too, like diet, hydration, and stress levels. These are also important for seeing results in hair growth.
Product and Ingredients That Help
There’s no single miracle solution when it comes to finding the right products, but everyone can incorporate and find the right products that work for them, like Minoxidil-infused formulas. For those that prefer something less chemical-based, Prado recommends natural ingredients like turmeric oil, arnica, and saw palmetto (which she uses in her brand's hair lengthening serum).
"Increasing your levels of biotin is really helpful for promoting healthier hair growth, which can be an introductory over-the-counter solution,” Potempa explains. She also recommends haircare products infused with bonding ingredients for healthier strands from the inside out.
