The past year has been a big year for bob cuts, and they're not going anywhere for 2024. There's been the butterfly bob, the wolf cut, the braided bob, the micro bob, the blunt bob, and even the French bob. But this year, we're embracing the ever-chic Italian bob.

The Italian bob cut is a classic style that works beautifully on any hair texture. Unlike the French bob, which is more about sleek, sharp lines, the Italian version lets the hair flow a bit longer and adds a lively bounce. It's not as blunt but brings more versatility and volume to the table with its fun, layered cuts.

"All face shapes and head shapes can wear this look but it's about what kind of accents or signatures can be placed in order to fit the person who's wearing it best," says Christiaan van Bremen, a bi-coastal hairstylist who works with clients at the top-rated Treehouse Social Club in Lower Manhattan. "[I recommend] maybe doing a little detail work around the face-framing layers to accentuate the cheekbones or jawlines or taking a little bit of weight off the hair without sacrificing the silhouette of the cut."

Italian bobs have a slight variation compared to their French counterparts. Instead of ending right at the jawbone, they typically fall just above the shoulders at the base of the neck. The key to mastering this style is perfecting the curls at the bottom. The curls are delicately textured inward, creating a beautiful V-shaped effect. It's all about adding that extra touch of elegance to your look.

"A benefit of having this cut is that it allows you to still have a lot of hair to play with," says van Bremen. "You can still do a half-pony or work with rollers and give it a lot more bend and wave."

As van Bremen said, the beauty of a longer bob cut is its versatility in styling. With the Italian bob, your hair will still be long enough for a laid-back updo or tousled for that effortlessly chic bedhead vibe. But don't be fooled; it can be just as easily transformed into a sleek, formal look with a straightener or amped up with curlers for extra bounce. It may be one hairstyle, but the potential looks are limitless.
