'Euphoria's Hunter Schafer Reveals How Makeup Expresses Her Versatility
Euphoria actress Hunter Schafer opens up about the power of makeup on and off the screen.
Hunter Schafer is an American actress born on the last day of 1999. Her strength and personality impress anyone who thinks that young people can't be that deep. Maybe that was even the main point for her to have won so much affection from viewers when playing Jules in the critically-acclaimed and mega-successful HBO series Euphoria.
The show was not only responsible for its star Zendaya's 2020 Emmy win, but it also receive the award for Outstanding Contemporary Makeup. Before embodying her multifaceted character, Schafer modeled for brands such as Calvin Klein, Rick Owens, and Miu Miu. In an exclusive interview for L'OFFICIEL, she tells what it's like to express herself through cameras, catwalks, and colors.
L'OFFICIEL: Euphoria is extremely popular, especially among young people. Makeup is an important point for the aesthetics of the work. Do you think beauty can be part of how someone expresses themselves?
Hunter Schafer: I believe so. I use makeup these days to show something that is here inside of me to the outside world. When I was younger it didn't work that well. I was more concerned with looking pretty or trying to be something I'm not, with another image. Now I use it to express my personality myself.
L'O: You worked as a model before debuting as an actress. Did you act on the catwalk and in editorials or did you just show your personality there?
HS: All the things I've done professionally, whether acting, modeling, or with my art, I've always channeled the creativity that resides in me. So modeling and acting are like telling stories through my body—whether in front of the camera or on a runway.
L'O: When you're happy, what kind of makeup do you opt for?
HS: I really like to draw on my face, to express how I'm feeling to the world. For this, shades like green, purple, and blue are my favorites when creating.
L'O: What's in your character Jules's makeup that you like the most?
HS: I love collaborating with makeup artists working in production when they're developing Jules's features. There is so much meaning in that makeup. It's like a great storytelling tool. I love that my character uses makeup to express herself.
L'O: You recently became a Japanese brand ambassador for Shiseido. Is this your first time shooting a campaign for a beauty brand?
HS: I chose to work with Shiseido because I was inspired by their level of artistic detail. There's a beautiful parallel between art and makeup and that's what attracted me to the brand.
L'O: What do you think about this oriental skincare trend, with a focus on self-care?
HS: I think self-care is very important. Personally, in order to look good and feel good, you need to start by reflecting on your interior and thus expressing how you feel with your exterior, with your body.
