Although everyone's skin is unique in its own way, and we all have that one product or step that can make or break our routine, there's one thing we can all agree on: winter leaves our skin feeling drier than ever.

As natural moisture disappears from the air, cold, harsh winds swoop in, draining any remaining hydration from our skin. That’s why adjusting your skincare routine—especially swapping out lighter summer products—can make a world of difference as we transition from the end of fall into the heart of winter. During this time, our skin craves extra care and attention. The key to surviving the season? Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate.

It can be tricky to navigate what works for you, so L'OFFICIEL asked Dr. Courtney Rubin, a board-certified Dermatologist and founder of Fig.1 Skincare, for the best tips and tricks for transitioning your skincare routine from summer to fall and winter.

First thing's first: Dr. Rubin suggests swapping out lighter gel or lotion moisturizers that are good for summer and trying thicker creams and balms.

"The best way to combat dry skin in the winter is to ensure you are using skin barrier-supportive skincare," Dr. Rubin explains. "This includes a gentle (cream or oil) cleanser that doesn't strip the skin, a treatment or serum is hyaluronic acid for hydration, and a moisturizing cream."

Dr. Rubin suggests looking for moisturizers with specific ingredients like glycerin, squalane, ceramides, and hyaluronic acid, as they hydrate and condition the skin. However, avoid harsher ingredients like retinol, glycolic acid, and L-ascorbic acid. Want to add even more moisture? Try a facial oil to seal in that moisture as a last step in your nighttime skincare. Dr. Rubin also reminds us to sleep with a humidifier nearby.

If you used up all your winter skincare from last season and need a good product refresh, Dr. Rubin's Fig.1 Skincare brand offers quality and clinically proven skincare for all types of skin.

"The Gentle Cream Cleanser is the perfect gentle, soft, and non-stripping cleanser for dry winter skin," Dr Rubin recommends. "The Hydrating & Balancing Toner is a great hydrating treatment to layer under moisturizer. The Ceramide Moisturizer is full of ceramides, peptides, hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and squalane and hydrates the skin for 24 hours."

So, once you're done swapping out your summer wardrobe, don't forget to switch out your skincare while you're at it.
