'Euphoria' Makeup Has Defined Beauty in 2019

Though maximalist beauty has been around for a long time, the hit HBO show helped to bring the fun looks into the everyday this year.

Editorial makeup isn’t a new thing; bold, graphic eye makeup has been gracing magazine covers and beauty icons for decades. But thanks to HBO’s Euphoria, glittery-heavy eye looks are no longer reserved for parties, runway shows, or editorial shoots; they can be everyday looks. After the show exploded this summer, celebrities across all categories have been continuing to normalize boldness and creativity in our everyday presentation. Below, we took a look at some of the highlights from the trend that's utterly taken over the year in beauty and seems certain to carry over into the new decade.

Sometimes I think "Euphoria makeup" should be called "Pat McGrath makeup," as the veteran makeup artist has been doing similar looks for a quarter of a century. McGrath—the queen of makeup, or Mother, if you will—paid homage to Hunter Schafer’s character Jules in her makeup looks for Anna Sui’s Spring 2020 show. Some of the models had cute cloud accents on top of the already bold pink eye looks, and the full effect brought a modern energy to the season's Victorian-inspired designs.

Jonathan Cohen’s Spring 2020 collection was a stunningly bright experience, inspired by the merging of Mexican and American cultures that the designer experienced growing up. Some of the models rocked eyeshadow in shades of bright yellow, the exact color of the marigolds that honor the dead in Mexican culture.

Attending a dinner, Jameela Jamil matched her monochrome outfit to her bold red winged liner, which was actually inspired by Euphoria. She debuted the look in a story on her Instagram, captioning the snap “Watches Euphoria once…” and then, in a perfect coincidence, ran into Schafer that night.

When we think of Euphoria makeup, we think of Alexa Demie. Her character Maddy had some of the cleanest and meanest makeup of the season, and it seems like Demie isn't going to stop rocking the bold looks anytime soon. Here's the most recent "Euphoria-inspired" look she wore.

Katy Perry’s makeup artist Michael Anthony did this Euphoria-inspired look for her recent show in Seattle, adding Swarovski crystals for an ultra-luxurious touch.

The craze has also inspired Gigi Hadid to stray from her usual natural look for something a little more exciting, a subtle duochrome pop in her inner corners courtesy of Patrick Ta. The look went viral, and the supermodel later brought it back in a somewhat more dramatic version when she attended the CMAs with Kacey Musgraves.

Could Euphoria hair be the next big thing? Maybe Kacey Musgraves will make it so. For a show in New Orleans, Giovanni Delgado made the fashion-favorite country star shine by putting glittery strands into her ponytail, and the result was mesmerizing magic.
