Dior Makeup Artist Peter Philips Shares How to Get a Runway-Worthy Complexion
L'OFFICIEL speaks to the Creative and Image Director for Dior Makeup about the clean and luminous faces seen on the Dior Spring/Summer 2022 Haute Couture runway.
In addition to the sparkling Haute Couture creations on the Dior runway earlier this week, a minimalist beauty look was displayed on each of the models, creating a collectively bold effect. The makeup, courtesy of Creative and Image Director for Dior Makeup Peter Philips, was centered around a sharp swipe of white eyeliner under each eye, and complemented by a smooth and silky complexion.
Eyeliner has been the focal point of Dior’s runway beauty looks for the past few seasons, and in order to make the liner pop, the makeup really starts with prepping the rest of the face. According to Philips, “Once your skin gives the illusion of perfection, any makeup will work.”
Thus, the artist preps each model’s skin before applying any makeup. This season, Philips relied on Dior’s Capture Totale routine to plump the skin and get the canvas ready for foundation. The Dior Capture Totale Intensive Essence Lotion was applied first, followed by the Capture Totale Super Potent Serum. Since the beauty look centers on the eyes, Philips gave the area some extra TLC with the Capture Title Super Potent Eye Serum and topping it with the Dior Eye Reviver Patches to lock in the moisture, banish any under-eye circles or darkness, and achieve a more awake look.
Once the skin was hydrated, Philips applied the Dior Forever Skin Veil Primer to get a smooth base before evening out the skin tone with foundation. The makeup artist had to be mindful of skin looking too shiny on the runway, so he opted for the matte finish of the Dior Forever Foundation for each of the models. The foundation has become Philips’ go-to complexion product in his kit thanks to its 85 shades available in a matte or glow finish. According to the MUA, it “feels like a skincare routine, gives beautiful coverage, and makes the skin look fabulous—and that’s the perfect base for playful eyeliner."
This season, Dior’s Haute Couture collection walked the runway twice in one day (due to audience capacity COVID safety measures), so Philips also had to make sure the makeup would last throughout the afternoon. Philips noted that having a solid skin care routine before applying the makeup can help its staying power, in addition to making the skin look healthier in the first place. But for instances where touch ups were necessary, he used the Dior Forever Skin Correct. Setting the look with the Dior Forever Perfect Fix, the look was sealed with a fresh and luminous effect that complemented the lightness of the sparkling couture fashion.
