Claude Monet Painting Goes on Sale After 25 Years
Monet's Coin du Bassin aux Nymphéas may sell for more than $40 million.
Claude Monet is one of the world's most celebrated impressionist painters. Despite having painted many works, because of his fame, few paintings actually reach the market for fans and collectors. However, after a 24-year hiatus, Coin du Bassin aux Nymphéas, one of the artist's last pieces, will be put up for auction.
The sale will take place in New York City by Sotheby's, one of the most specialized auction houses, at the end of November. The painting is expected to sell for at least $40 million.
Painted in 1918 in Monet's Garden at Giverny in northern France, this work features water lilies (aquatic plants with floating leaves and beautifully colored petals), one of his favorite objects for study and observation. It was sold at auction in 1997 by Christie's and fetched $6.71 million at the time.
Demand for Monet's work has grown in recent years. In May 2019, his 1890 painting Meules was purchased for no less than $110.7 million.
