'Luna Luna' Debuts in NYC: Must-Visit Art Carnival With Basquiat and Haring
Luna Luna: Forgotten Fantasy invites visitors to immerse themselves in a fantastical, artsy fairground with pieces by Jean-Michel Basquiat, Salvador Dalí, Keith Haring, and more.
Luna Luna—an extraordinary blend of art, whimsy, and carnival magic—takes center stage today in New York. The avant-garde fairground opens at the Shed from November 20 through January 5, 2025.
This year's fair will feature works by some of the 20th century’s most iconic artists, including Jean-Michel Basquiat, Salvador Dalí, Keith Haring, Sonia Delaunay, and many more. General admission starts at $44, while tickets for children (under 16) starts at $35. There are membership passes available, which is an especially good option for those who plan to visit more than once.
The art amusement park has been around since 1987, when it debuted in Hamburg, Germany. It was originally conceptualized by multimedia artist André Heller, and it became a pioneering effort to fuse the enchantment and nostalgia of a traditional carnival with avant-garde art, aiming to immerse visitors in a journey through installations, rides, and interactive attractions. Despite its initial success, Luna Luna was inactive for over three decades before it got rediscovered and revitalized in 2023.
Luna Luna: Forgotten Fantasy returned to the public with a triumphant debut in Los Angeles, reigniting global fascination with this extraordinary artistic fairground. Now, New York audiences have the chance to experience this unique cultural phenomenon. Some rides are off-limits. Kenny Scharf’s painted chair swing ride, Keith Haring’s carousel, Arik Brauer’s carousel, and Jean-Michel Basquiat’s Ferris wheel that are for viewing only.
At the Shed, visitors can explore and interact with the original fairground pieces, each a stunning blend of visual artistry and playful design. The event invites attendees to step into a fantastical world and reimagine the innovation of the original grounds. Buy tickets online.
