Cultural Recommendations: The Frida Kahlo Exhibit at the V&A

If you happen to find yourself across the pond this summer, pay a visit to 'Frida Kahlo: Making Her Self Up' at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London.

The unconventional Mexican artist, Frida Kahlo, was one of the most influential painters of the twentieth century thanks to her artworks, outspoken political views, and striking personality. Not to mention that she was and still is a veritable style icon, with her eclectic taste, love of color, artistic prints and striking jewelry being a source of inspiration for many designers. Since her death in 1954, Kahlo's impressive wardrobe remained hidden from the public for almost fifty years until it was taken in by a Mexican museum in 2004.

This exhibition at the renown Victoria & Albert Museum in London marks the first time that Frida Kahlo's clothing collection and personal objects will be exhibited outside of Mexico. It reveals how the artist's style developed over the years and how she managed to unite Mexican and Western influences. If you happen to be in the region, discover more than two hundred pieces ranging from clothing, jewelry, the artificial leg that she designed in the form of a red lace-up boot with a wedge heel after her leg was amputated in 1953, to the iconic eyebrow pencil with which she tended to her famous brows.
