The Best Tea Rooms in New York City to Sip While You Spill

Here are some of the finest tearooms to escape to in New York City.

Originally an English tradition, afternoon tea has become one of the most popular social events all over the world. It was originally introduced by Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford in 1840 when she realized the wait between lunch and dinner was too lengthy for her liking. Around four o'clock, the Duchess would get peckish and ask for some tea and pastries to be delivered to her chamber. Over time, she began inviting her friends to come around in the afternoons, and it soon became a daily occurrence. The ladies would dress up in their most elegant gowns and gather in the drawing room to gossip and discuss their lives. Cucumber sandwiches and scones with cream and jam were and still are typically served alongside a selection of teas, ranging from English Breakfast to Jasmine Green.

L'OFFICIEL has compiled all of the best NYC tea rooms to teleport you back to high-society England in the 1800s.
