From Modeling to Movies, Rafferty Law is a New Star on the Rise
Twenty-three, the son of movie stars Jude Law and Sadie Frost, and raised in London, Rafferty Law is ready to conquer the world as a model, actor, and musician. From walking Valentino's runway to being surrounded by artists, he has garnered the praise from many in the fashion and entertainment spheres, not to mention attention for an unconfirmed flirtation with pop star Rita Ora. At the beginning of 2021, Sky TV will launch Twist, a contemporary reinterpretation of the 19th century novel by Charles Dickens. Directed by Martin Owen, Law plays the protagonist alongside a monster-like Michael Caine. In more excitement, the first album from his band, which he has played with since he was a boy, will also be released next year. Known as Outer Stella Overdrive, Law plays with Rudy Albarn (the son of Damon, the charismatic voice of Blur), Jamin Amin, and Kelvin Bueno. The band's single "Bad Times" has already made a splash, in part thanks to a music video directed by Law's mother.
Here, L'OFFICIEL speaks with the young talent about is budding role in the world of fashion and film.
L’OFFICIEL: You are becoming a regular presence at fashion week. How important is fashion to you?
RAFFERTY LAW: I was about 16 when I started reasoning with my mother about proving myself as a model. It took me a couple of jobs to understand that I liked it a lot, to get in touch with stimulating people, starting with the photographers you shoot with. It also helped me strengthen my self-esteem and to make me discover a fundamental aspect of my character. I realized that to work well, I have to be put under pressure. I like that feeling of positive tension that pushes me to give my best.
L'O: Does that apply to acting too?
RL: When they gave me the role of Oliver Twist I knew I had to prove that I really deserved that part, so I prepared as much as possible. The contemporary cut that the director wanted required a great physical agility of my character, so I started with parkour courses and additional training in the gym. I wanted to be the best I could when I was on set.
L’O: And how did it go?
RL: In front of the cameras, everything was natural. Since I was little I have been experimenting and testing myself between music and acting. I feel that I am slowly realizing my dream of performing and being able to communicate with the public. To tell the truth my first desire was to be a footballer, but now I would say that I am happier like this.
L’O: And your father can give you more tips in terms of movies than in midfield...
RL: During the lockdown we made a short film together with the direction of Darren Strowger (the current partner of the mother Sadie) and we are happy because "The Hat"—whose proceeds will be donated to charity—was nominated for the Best UK Short Film at the Raindance Film Festival, which will take place in late October. While filming, I realized the good fortune of being surrounded by wonderful family and friends. I hope to be surrounded by this positivity in the future as well. If I keep my head in place, work hard and don't let difficulties knock me out, I say I can.
